Shri Maha Mritunjay puja is implemented with a specific count and calculations of chant or jaap of Shri MahaMritunjay Mantra. The literal meaning of Shri Maha Mrutunjay Mantra is the Mantra which can even defeat the death coming towards the native and accordingly MahaMritunay puja is generally performed for a native who is suffering from very bad health or whose death is apprehended according to Vedic Jyotish in the coming times. Lord Shiva is the presiding Lord of Shri Maha Mritunjaya Mantra in his Maha kaal form as he is the one among Trinity or Tridevas who controls the matters related to death of every living being. Hence a prayer is done to Lord Shiva through Shri MahaMritunjay Mantra that any kind of unnatural death or untimely death coming to the native should be avoided and the native should live a long and complete life. This puja is also performed as a remedy of Vedic Jyotish to rectify doshas like Nadi dosh, Bhakut Dosh and other such doshas which are formed during the process of Kundali matching through Gun Milan. Shri MahaMritunjay Puja is generally started on a Monday and it is almost always completed on a Monday where the day of start of a Shri MahaMritunjay Puja can sometimes change depending upon the time which is required by the Pandits doing this puja to complete the chant of Shri MahaMritunjay Mantra. Generally the Pandits/purohits are able to finish this chant or Jaap of Shri Maha Mrutunjay Mantra in 7 days and hence this puja is generally started on a Monday and it is completed on the following Monday and all the necessary steps for this puja are conducted during this time which is Monday to Monday. Shri Maha Mritunjay Puja vidhi or procedure may include many different steps at many stages and it is not possible to mention all of these steps here but we will cover most of the important steps for this puja.
The most important step in performing any puja is to perform the chant of a Mantra specified for that puja and this chant or jaap amounts to a number of 125,000 in most of the cases and accordingly a Shri MahaMritunjay Puja should ideally include a chant of 125,000 Shri Maha MrutunjayMantras and rest of the procedure or method is built around this chant. At the day of starting or beginning of this puja, a Sankalpam or resolution is taken by the Pandits/purohits which are usually 5 to 7 in number. In this Sankalpam, the head Pandit or the main Pandit/purohit takes an oath in front of Lord Shiva that he and his other colleague or assistant Pandits are going to perform a chant of 125,000 Shri Maha Mritunjaya Mantra for a specific person who is the native and whose name, his father’s name and his family surname is also mentioned in Sankalpam. The names of the Pandits doing this chant are also mentioned, the days taken to finish this chant are also mentioned which are generally 7 to 10 days and the specific wishes required by the native as a result of this puja are also mentioned and this is the first step which starts a Vedic Shri Maha Mritunjaya Puja. The specific wish asked during the sankalp of this puja may be to protect the native from untimely death, to bless the native with long age or to rectify Nadi dosh, Bhakut dosh or other such doshas formed in the horoscopes of a couple during the process of Kundali Matching.
After this, all the Pandits start chanting Shri Maha Mrutunjay Mantra on daily basis for about 8 to 10 hours a day and in such a way that they are able to complete the total chant of 125,000 mantras till the decided day of completionof this puja. The pandits/purohits keep on chanting the Shri Maha MrutunjayMantra on daily basis till the day of the finishing and they complete the committed or devoted chant of mantras on that day. After fulfillment of chant of Shri Maha MrutunjayMantra, the ceremony which is concluded by purohits is organized for the puja which can take about 2-3 hours if done with proper action. A puja for lord Shiva, goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha and other members of Shiva family is performed first and many kinds of offerings like flowers, fruits, bhang, dhatura, bel patra, vermillion, bangles, red clothes and cosmetics for goddess Parvati, sweets, halwa, dhoop, Deepak, milk, curd, honey, desi ghee, sugar and many other things are offered to these gods and goddesses and the completion of the resolution or Sankalpam taken by the pandits/purohits is repeated and it is conveyed to the gods by pandits/purohits that they have completed the chant of 125,000 Shri Maha MrutunjayMantra in the time guaranteed by them and in the manner guaranteed by them at the day of start of this puja and it is also mentioned that all this chant and puja has been done on behalf of their client whose name and other details are again mentioned and it is then preyed that their client should be blessed with the good results of this Shri Maha MrutunjayPuja since he has followed all the proceedings for this puja and he has got this puja done through pandits/purohits in order to get benefit results from Shri Maha Mrutunjay Puja. It should be noted here that this puja performed at the day of completion/finishing of Shri Maha Mrutunjay Puja follows specific actions and accordingly this puja and procedure can differ for different kind of Vedic Pujas.
